The Technique

Most of our tiles are decorated using the tube-line process. This deceptively simple craft has been known for centuries. It was particularly popular in the Art Nouveau period, not least in Scotland. Tube-line ceramics have a combination of rich colour and lively drawn detail. Using a tool, not unlike an icing bag, filled with liquid clay we pipe a remarkably fine design onto the blank tiles. The tiles are then hand-coloured with potter's glazes and a sable brush. As with all ceramics, the results can only be appreciated after the tiles have been fired in a kiln.
